February 7 is Safe Internet Day in Spain, a day which is promoted in Spain by the INSAFE/INHOPE network, and guarded by the European Commission.

The objective of Safe Internet Day is to make the web a place of opportunities for children and young people where they can participate, create and share positively and freely, in addition to promoting awareness of the responsible use of technology and the Internet. This involves educating people about new tools and systems, and warning them about fake news, cybersecurity and fraud to make the Internet a better and safer place for everyone.

To use the Internet safely, both your browser and your antivirus software should be totally up to date. Virus, malware and phishing software are updating all the time, bringing with them new threats to your online safety, so it’s vital to always have the latest version of your browser and antivirus software with all the most recent updates and patches.
When making purchases online, ensure you’re on the seller’s official website and not a similar but fraudulent page. One way to check is that the page’s URL should start with https://. It’s also a good idea to check the site’s privacy policy and to only use payment methods such as PayPal or prepaid payment cards.
Never buy anything online or input your passwords or bank details if you’re connected to a public Internet network such as hotel Wi-Fi.
If you receive an email from a sender you don’t trust 100%, never click on links or open attachments because they could lead to sites that can install viruses on your device.
Make sure all your passwords are very secure. Avoid using the same passwords for all your accounts, and when creating a new password use a combination of capital letters, lower case letters, numbers and symbols. This is now a requirement on many sites anyway.
When installing new software, don’t agree to conditions and permissions without being sure what you’re agreeing to. Remember that if you have to give an app access to your location, microphone, camera, contacts, calls or other data, you are giving free access to this information for other people.
