Torrevieja: officially the fastest growing city in Spain
The province of Alicante alone has gained more than 70,000 new residents in the last two years

As of January 1 this year, the Costa Blanca city of Torrevieja, loved by Brits and Spaniards alike, has become the area of Spain which has grown the most population-wise, thanks in large parts to the number of expats from all over Europe flocking to its sandy coasts.
This is according to the latest ‘Population Census’ released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), which shows that the overall number of people living in the Alicante enclave grew by an impressive 6.8% last year.
To put this in context, the only Spanish town to come close to this population explosion was Estepona, in Andalucia, at 4.6%, followed by the always popular Benidorm, with a 4.3% increase.
Alicante as a whole has reached the record books too in its own right, as it’s the province that’s seen the largest population jump in all of Spain, booming by 70,000 people, or by 2.5%.
The census placed the population figure of Spain at 48,085,361 inhabitants as of January 1, 2023, with a growth of almost 600,000 people in one year.
Of the 48,085,361 inhabitants registered in Spain, 41,995,741 are of Spanish nationality (87.3%), while the remaining 6,089,620, or 12.7%, are from another country. This represents a staggering 10.5% increase in the number of foreign residents in the last 12 months or so.
And it’s also worth remembering that while around 300,000 British citizens now call Spain their permanent home, a whopping 25% of all UK TIE card holders in Spain are registered as living in Alicante, and a third of the total are over 65 years of age, proving that the region continues to be a favourite among retirees.
