Three of Orihuela Costa's most flood-prone waterways are finally getting the clear-out they

Orihuela City Council has kicked off a three-month project targeting invasive vegetation and built-up debris along the coastal strip

Orihuela City Council has launched a new round of cleaning and maintenance work on waterways along Orihuela Costa, targeting three channels that play a key role in draining rainwater away from the coastal area during heavy downpours.

Work is currently under way on the Nacimiento River near Campoamor, the Rambla de las Estacas in Playa Flamenca and the Barranco Rubio ravine, also in Campoamor.

All three have been identified as priorities due to a build-up of invasive vegetation, sediment, plant debris and waste that has reduced their capacity to drain water effectively, raising the risk of flooding in nearby residential areas. The work involves mechanised clearing, riverbed cleaning and the removal of accumulated waste and materials.

The coastal works follow earlier interventions carried out inland, where the council has already tackled waterways including the area around the Twin Waterwheels and several ravines including Sanes, Los Muertos, Los Calderones and Bonanza.

The project has a base budget of €232,538 and is expected to take around three months to complete. It's being carried out under an agreement between Orihuela City Council and the Segura Hydrographic Confederation, with the council covering 60% of the costs.

According to the council, the work along Orihuela Costa has a strong preventative focus, with the aim of getting ahead of potential incidents before the next spell of intense rainfall rather than dealing with the consequences afterwards.
