The Department of Archaeological Heritage in the local council has contracted the drafting of a project that will allow the restoration of a municipality-owned windmill located in the eastern Cartagena town of El Algar.

 

El Algar is part of the Campo de Cartagena, an agricultural area with richly fertile soil, agriculture traditionally being the main economic activity of the area. Windmills have existed in the area since the 16th century, and those which produced flour were an essential part of life and the economy in Murcia, along with the water mills, from the 18th century until the mid-twentieth.

 

There are many examples of windmills throughout the Campo de Cartagena and they remain an essential part of the heritage and landscape of the countryside, which is why the Department of Heritage has vowed to continue their recovery and enhancement.

 

The restoration project, which is set to begin next year, is budgeted to cost 7,018 euros.

 

Sources from the Department have explained that this windmill is the most difficult of their restoration projects yet, situated as it is between two houses on Calle La Paz. As part of the restoration project of historical buildings in the area, the Cartagena City Council is also pricing works for Monte Sacro mill house, the Zabala windmill, the Molinete mill and the Las Piedras mill in Los Mateos.
