August 9 Put your arms around the Mar Menor in Los Alcázares to show support for the lagoon!
The fragile ecosystem of the Mar Menor is constantly under threat
For the 5th year an event called “Abrazo al Mar Menor” (A Hug for the Mar Menor) is being held on Saturday 9th August, with people linking arms around the shore of the lagoon to symbolize the need to protect it, and the occasion is marked in Los Alcázares with the full support of the Town Hall.
The highlight is the linking of arms at 13.00, with all volunteers welcome to turn up to the Plaza del Espejo to join in the demonstration of unity, forming a human chain demanding the protection and regeneration of the lagoon.
At 19.00 an ecological market in the Plaza del Espejo features sustainable produce representing the “responsible economy”, and at 20.00 a round table talk is being held to discuss the problems facing the Mar Menor. Among those taking part are Mayor Mario Pérez Cervera and environmental lawyer Eduardo Salazar.
The day ends in Los Alcázares with music from DJs, lasting until midnight, while elsewhere other demonstrations are being held not only around the Mar Menor but also in other parts of Spain and even in other countries.
