If you've ever looked at your payslip in Spain and wondered where a big chunk of your salary went, a newly published global report has the answer, and it doesn't make for particularly cheerful reading.

 

According to the 'Taxing Wages 2026' report released this week, more than 41% of what it costs an employer to hire someone in Spain never actually reaches the worker's pocket. That puts Spain well above the global OECD average of 35.1%, and while it's broadly in line with the wider European average, it's still higher than Portugal and comfortably behind only the likes of Belgium, Germany and France on the continent.

 

The figure has also been creeping upward. In 2024 it stood at 40.6% and by 2025 it had risen to 41.4%, driven mainly by income tax taking a larger share, with employer social security contributions adding to the pressure too. Spain's employer contributions alone account for more than 20% of total labour costs, which makes hiring significantly more expensive than in many comparable economies.

 

Part of the problem, according to the General Council of Economists, is that Spain's income tax system hasn't been adjusted to keep pace with inflation. That means as wages rise, workers are pushed into paying more tax without any formal rate changes actually taking place.

 

In practice, a pay rise doesn't always translate into a meaningful increase in take-home pay, particularly at lower income levels where tax benefits and subsidies start to get reduced or cut off entirely as earnings go up. In some cases, a decent chunk of a pay increase can effectively disappear before it's ever seen.

 

Spain isn't alone in facing this trend, as tax pressure on wages has risen across most OECD countries for four years running, hitting its highest level since 2016.
