Woman in Cordoba under investigation for selling her baby
A couple in the Andalucia province allegedly offered the woman 20,000 euros to carry their child

In the space of just a few months, Andalucia has come under the spotlight for the second time over an illegal surrogacy scandal. The authorities are investigating several people in Cordoba after it came to light that a young woman was offered 20,000 euros by a childless couple to have their baby.
During a press conference this week, the chief prosecutor of Córdoba, Fernando Sobron, said that his department can "appreciate a special situation of vulnerability in a woman due to the economic difficulty that causes many foreign citizens to go to Spain to improve their situation."
The surrogate in question is from a Latin American country and who, "being in a situation of special economic difficulty, contacted through social networks a couple of citizens residing in a town in the province, offered her to undergo a surrogacy in exchange for 20,000 euros."
Despite Spain’s forward-thinking legislation on gender rights and several recent reforms, surrogacy is still illegal in this country and if convicted, all parties face time behind bars.
Prosecutors believe that those involved decided that, once she became pregnant, the woman would remain in Spain and hand over the infant once it was born. For the duration of her pregnancy, the woman would stay in the home of the adopting couple.
However, the plans quickly hit a snag once the surrogate mother arrived in Spain. According to the report, “although the victim expressed her preference for the insemination to occur artificially, the woman told her that this was very expensive and that she had to have sexual relations with her partner.”
Although the Latin American agreed at first, she was eventually coerced into the act through “violence and intimidation."
The investigation is still ongoing and while clear crimes of sexual assault, illegal detention and forced surrogacy have been committed, the childless couple might also face charges for human trafficking.
Back in March, four people were arrested in Seville accused of crimes of illegal trafficking, the attempted sale of a child and document falsification after it was discovered a childless couple had paid a pregnant woman for her baby.
Social Services at the Virgen del Rocío Maternal and Child Hospital raised the alarm when a woman in labour was admitted carrying medical records and identity documentation that clearly didn’t belong to her.
