If ever there was someone who should immediately go out and buy a lottery ticket, it’s a young man from Madrid who narrowly missed being ploughed by a car that shot backwards down a Metro escalator.

The video of Spain’s luckiest public transport passenger is setting the internet alight as CCTV footage from the María Tudor rail station in the Sanchinarro neighbourhood shows the seconds leading up to his miraculous escape.

The camera is focused on the escalator leading up from the platform and the man can ben seen nonchalantly looking at his phone, legs comfortably crossed, as he waits to reach the top.

But just as he gets off, the passenger can be seen hesitating before turning on his heel and darting down the stairs. A split second later, a car comes speeding through the station and smashes into the escalator where the man was just standing.

There was no driver in the vehicle so it’s unclear how it managed to ram through the building at such speed, but thankfully everyone involved escaped without a scratch.
