ARCHIVED - Villajoyosa completes the restoration of La Malladeta natural park
Extensive agroforestry restoration work has been carried out in the natural area in the Marina Baixa area of Alicante province

More than 750,000 euros has been ploughed into transforming La Malladeta natural park in Villajoyosa with huge forest recovery efforts completed this week.
The whole coastal park has been redefined and cleared of sediment and dry or diseased vegetation, and around 700 native trees have been replanted along with up to 6,000 herbaceous and aromatic species to complete the agroforestry restoration.
Villajoyosa Mayor, Andreu Verdú, accompanied by council technicians, officially signed off the works during a visit to La Malladeta on Tuesday March 21.
He said: "The Malladeta natural area has always been important to our town. It is an emblematic place, admired and enjoyed by residents and visitors, not only for its environmental value, but also from a cultural, social and recreational perspective.
"This project has served to adapt and recover this green area for social, cultural and recreational uses, while respecting the environmental requirements of its natural surroundings."
In addition to clearing and replanting, a drip irrigation network connected to the drinking water network has been installed and existing paths and tracks have been adapted to make them more accessible.
"New paths have also been constructed with a light paving of cement, ecological fibre and gravel, non-aggressive for the environment, which give the path a certain solidity for the passage of gardening machinery to maintain and clean this green lung of Villajoyosa," added the mayor.
For greater safety in the area in hours of low light, the accesses are lit up with sustainable lighting using self-consumption fixtures with solar panels.
Two new viewpoints have also been erected and street furniture has been installed, including benches, litter bins and information panels detailing the flora and fauna of La Malladeta.
