The Playa Flamenca beach has retained its Blue Flag despite the mysterious spillages
Council workers are once again present on Cala La Mosca in Playa Flamenca, trying to stop the flow of unsightly spills which are pouring down through the beach and into the sea. These same issues have been going on for more than a year now and technicians can’t quite figure out what’s causing them.
Last year it was a different story, as the Environmental and Consumer Education Association (Adeac), the body in charge of granting the blue flags, removed the accolade from Cala La Mosca because so many water spills had been detected. However, on that occasion the problem was quickly corrected and the Blue Flag was reinstated.
This time last month, as the Orihuela Costa beaches were preparing for the busy summer season ahead, the Cabo Roig and Lomas Neighbourhood Association posted photos on social networks of the deplorable state of the Playa Flamenca shoreline. The very next day, workers appeared to carry out drainage work on the mysterious water spillages and to remove vegetation that had gathered there.
Unfortunately, there’s even more bad news for Playa Flamenca, as Cala La Mosca is still without a beach bar because of some problem with the contracts.
Meanwhile, municipal sources have indicated that the City Council considers the Blue Flag in Cala Estaca lost this season, although it is working with Adeac to recover it in 2025.
The awarding body carries out their analyses in August, and the authorities hope to have eliminated the unsightly spills by this point. However, the council is at pains to point out that both Cala Estaca and Cala La Mosca are perfectly safe for swimmers.
