Two boat captains arrested after another 59 migrants land on Murcia coast
The latest arrival brings the number of migrants reaching the Cartagena coastline in the past two weeks to almost 300
Two men have been arrested after a powerful boat carrying migrants dropped 59 people off at Calblanque on the coast of the Region of Murcia.
The Guardia Civil intercepted the four-engine semi-rigid boat on Monday August 31, around 12 miles southeast of Monte Cenizas, after the migrants had been taken ashore. Patrols deployed around the Calblanque area located the people who had arrived, while officers arrested the two men who were allegedly piloting the vessel.
The latest incident is part of a series of migrant boat arrivals along the Murcia coast over the past two weeks, with almost 300 people now having reached the Region during this period.
The Guardia Civil also intercepted another boat at sea on Sunday night carrying 10 migrants. They were taken to Cartagena, where they were identified and assisted by the Red Cross before being handed over to the National Police.
According to Government Delegate Francisco Lucas, the latest operation highlights the scale of the challenge facing the Guardia Civil and its Maritime Service. He also pointed to the additional resources recently introduced to improve surveillance along the coast.
The operation involved the S-40 semi-rigid boat, which entered service on Friday with more powerful engines designed to strengthen maritime patrols.
The recent series of arrivals began on August 19, when a large speedboat carrying several dozen migrants reached Cala del Barco in Cartagena. The arrival caught beachgoers by surprise, with the migrants dispersing into the surrounding area.
Another boat reached Punta Negra, between Cala Reona and Calblanque, on August 22, carrying around 50 people before quickly heading back out to sea. A second arrival was also reported that day at Cala Huncos in Rincón de San Ginés, although the number of people on board wasn’t confirmed.
Around 50 more people reached Cala Dentoles in Calblanque on August 26. Two days later, another boat arrived at Cala Dorada, where the Guardia Civil intercepted 57 people, although police sources estimated that around 70 had originally been on board.
On August 30, seven Algerian nationals were also intercepted at Cabo Cope in Águilas, while the separate boat carrying 10 migrants was located at sea that same night.
The latest arrival of 59 people brings the known total to almost 300 migrants who have reached the Region’s coast since August 19. The figure could be higher because the number of people aboard the boat that arrived at Cala Huncos hasn’t been established.
Francisco Lucas said the Spanish Government remained committed to strengthening security along the coast and tackling the criminal networks involved in migrant trafficking. He also called for the Guardia Civil and National Police to be given the space to carry out their operations safely and without unnecessary interference.
