Torrevieja demands action on N-332 widening after years of delays
More than 60,000 vehicles use the notorious bottleneck outside Torrevieja every day

Anyone who regularly drives between Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa will know the N-332 bottleneck all too well. Now, after years of promises and waiting, Torrevieja’s mayor is once again demanding that the Spanish government finally get on with widening the road.
Mayor Eduardo Dolón has renewed calls for the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility to put the long-awaited project out to tender, saying the lack of progress has become unacceptable.
According to Mr Dolón, the Torrevieja Town Hall has made more than 100 requests for a meeting with Transport Minister Óscar Puente or senior officials responsible for the project. He claims none has resulted in the dialogue the municipality has been seeking.
The mayor said the lack of response was disrespectful not just to the town hall but to Torrevieja’s residents and the thousands of people who visit the city every year.
For drivers, the problem is hardly new. The N-332 carries more than 60,000 vehicles every day through Torrevieja and traffic increases significantly during holiday periods. The result is a familiar headache of congestion, long journeys and difficult access to and from the city. For people travelling between Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa and the wider Alicante coastline, the road can become a particularly frustrating part of the journey.
Mayor Dolón argued that widening the road isn’t a luxury project or a request for special treatment, but an essential investment in road safety and mobility.
He described the situation as "third-world", pointing out that a city of Torrevieja’s size and importance continues to rely on a road that is already struggling to cope with demand.
The frustration will be familiar to many people living in Orihuela Costa too. The area has long faced complaints about major infrastructure projects taking years to progress, with residents often feeling that their needs receive less attention than those of Orihuela City.
The comparison with the long-discussed pedestrian bridge at Lomas de Cabo Roig is an obvious one. That project has also become something of a symbol of the gap between plans being announced and residents actually seeing them become reality.
For now, there is still no indication of when work on the N-332 widening will begin. After years of the road being recognised as a major bottleneck, residents and businesses are once again being asked to wait for the project to move forward.
