The temperatures are set to soar this week in the Region of Murcia and the beaches are expected to be packed, but the common summer conundrum is what to do with your belongings if you want to head in for dip. There are some ingenious tips and tricks for keeping valuables safe on the beach but sadly, each year stories abound of unlucky tourists and locals getting fleeced.

But what, specifically, are the beach-scouring thieves after? Strangely enough, in the Region of Murcia, the most commonly robbed product is flip-flops, even though they only cost a couple of euros in most stores. However, while Murcia crooks appear to have inexpensive taste, the trend varies widely across the country and in Spain as a whole, sunscreen, condoms and alcoholic drinks are the most likely items to go missing.

This is according to a recent study by Checkpoint Systems, whose experts surmised that 26.7% of all robberies occur during the summer months. And its not just hapless holidaymakers getting caught either, since the retail sector routinely loses around 170 million euros to thieves.

It’s a growing problem too, the Ministry of the Interior says. In 2022, more than 170,000 thefts were reported in the third quarter, which was a 24.7% increase on the year before, a clear indication “that this upward trend will be repeated” in 2023.

Last year, Catalonia was the region that registered the most summer robberies, accounting for 20% of the national total, with most crooks pilfering pricey wines and spirits, sausages and ice-cream.

And whereas before the thieves tended to pinch items they could use themselves, increased prices and living expenses mean that these days, they’re more likely to go for products they can sell on.
