The Ministry of Health has reported that a total of 800 cases of monkeypox have now been confirmed in Spain, at least one of which was diagnosed in a child under the age of three. The data, collected up until June 27, shows that the oldest infection was reported in a person aged 67 but that the majority of patients are between 31 and 44 years.

Medical experts have so far been able to establish the transmission path of 273 cases; of these, 93.4% were infected through close sexual contact.

Clinical manifestations have been reported in 406 cases. Of these, at least 24 have been hospitalised but no deaths have yet been registered. The most frequent illnesses associated with monkeypox in Spain are secondary bacterial infections and mouth ulcers, although symptoms such as rashes, fever, asthenia and localised lymphadenopathy have also been noted.

A total of 16 autonomous communities have now confirmed cases of monkeypox, with Madrid at the top of the list with 436 infections. This is followed by Catalonia (130), Andalucía (105) and the Canary Islands (41).

The Valencian Community has diagnosed 12 cases of monkeypox while just one has been recorded in the Region of Murcia.
