San Javier secures land for new town centre car park
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
Located in Santiago de la Ribera, the new space will have room for 174 vehicles in all
San Javier Town Hall has just acquired a parcel of land from the Ministry of Defence for the development of a ‘sustainable’ parking lot along Calle Coronel Lopez Peña in Santiago de la Ribera. The planned improvements aim to alleviate parking shortages in the town centre.
Once the work is completed, the proposed facility will boast 166 standard car parking spots alongside four designated spaces each for limited mobility users and electric vehicle chargers.
Construction plans involve traffic realignment near the junction with RM-F34 road, featuring improved pedestrian crossings and a newly installed roundabout.
To accommodate growing demand for greener transportation alternatives, the planners have incorporated numerous eco-friendly features into the design. For instance, drainage pavers will reduce strain on the municipal water infrastructure and enable rainwater collection for irrigation purposes. Additionally, porous concrete should minimise heat absorption, while a pergola fitted with photovoltaic panels will power the charging stations and overhead LED lights.
The new car park, which has been valued at 1,914,828.78 euros, has been designed under the criteria of sustainability, adaptation to climate change and energy efficiency. Financed at 80% via a 2 million euro grant awarded within the PRTR plan of the Next Generation EU program, the project aligns with broader efforts aimed at revitalising tourism areas throughout the Region of Murcia.
The mayor, José Miguel Luengo, pointed out that the new parking lot is “very good news in an urban area lacking this type of space, which will allow us to add about 200 new parking spaces near the Príncipe de Asturias park, which will help boost commerce and the urban centre.”
