Murcia city is getting ahead of the winter tourism game, partnering up with Spain’s national rail provider Renfe to offer a special package price when passengers book a train trip coupled with a restaurant and hotel reservation.

The timing is far from random, however, as the newest instalment of the high-speed AVE line in the Region of Murcia nears completion, and the authorities are hoping to attract congresses, conventions and official meetings as well as tourists who can enjoy all the culture, nature and heritage the Region has to offer.

“Our intention is that the visitor can design their trip in the simplest, easiest and most comfortable way, according to their preferences, so that in a single action they can buy an AVE ticket, book a hotel and restaurant,” explained the Minister of the Presidency, Tourism, Sports and Culture, Marcos Ortuño.

The 3-in-1 package hasn’t yet been finalised, but the Minister hopes to iron out the details with the affected businesses in the coming days.

According to Mr Ortuño, “the objective of this initiative is to reinforce the tourist image of the Region by taking advantage of the improvement in rail connectivity once we are connected with the AVE”. For this to work, “we need the conditions, frequencies and travel times to be ideal”, since “if not, the work will be in vain”.

“Let us remember that the central government decides the trains it schedules and the duration of the travel times. Any train that takes more than three hours to travel Madrid-Murcia is not High Speed,” he added.

The official journey times and routes haven’t been confirmed by Renfe, but it looks likely that the new schedule will include four round trips between Murcia and Madrid. Two, which include stops at several Alicante stations, will take almost three and a half hours. The other two direct routes will arrive in the Spanish capital in less than three hours.
