New Marvel blockbuster to be filmed in Cartagena
The third instalment of the movie Venom will be shot in Cartagena

Hollywood is glamming up the Cartagena neighbourhood of Los Mateos where scenes for the upcoming Marvel blockbuster Venom, starring Tom Hardy, will be filmed in the coming days. The project is, naturally, supposed to be top secret, but for the past few weeks the streets have been filled with machinery and hundreds of workers setting the stage for the main event.
The production company in place has already given us such greats as Game of Thrones and Terminator and the filming of the third instalment of the hugely popular Venom is expected to begin at the beginning of next week. For now, workers are still assembling the elaborate sets but in the next few days the crew will set up its base camp next to the roundabout and trailers will be brought in to house the movie’s all-star cast.
The producers, to give them their due, are keeping things in the community and around 50 Cartagena locals have been drafted in to watch over the equipment and ensure the set isn’t disturbed at the princely pay of between 80 and 90 euros a day.
Business owners are thrilled with the “influx of people that this implies for the neighbourhood,” according to the president of the Los Mateos Neighbourhood Association, Francisco García, since the crew is eating and drinking locally and their presence “gives life to the area.”
Cartagena has been chosen because of its similarity to certain Mexico streets, production boss Tate Aráez explained, who added that the port city is already being considered for “future productions.”
The municipality is well on its way to international recognition and plans are underway for the creation of its Film Office. Next week, Czech national television will be filming a travel documentary in Cartagena and it has become the first municipality in Spain to sign a Netflix deal. Movistar+ execs have also expressed an interest in filming here.
Scenes for Venom will also be shot in Calblanque, Cartagena City Council has confirmed.
