Murcia's call for 1000 family doctors exposes sector staffing shortages

The Region of Murcia is trying to increase the number of doctors as there is simply not enough

The president of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, is presenting to the central government of Spain the necessity of more family doctors in Murcia. The call has come with the aim of strengthening the staff and trying to fill a gap in the professional shortage that Spain, and Murcia in particular, is facing now and in the coming years.

This is just one of the proposals that the president of Murcia will take this coming Friday to the Conference of Presidents that will be held in the city of Santander, in the north of Spain. Miras is looking to put on the table a number of issues that he considers to be of the utmost importance in the Region of Murcia, and the shortage of doctors is right at the top of his list.

The president of Murcia stated yesterday, at the end of the extraordinary meeting of the School Council of the Region of Murcia at the Palacio de San Esteban, that the shortage of doctors that Murcia is facing is a big issue, and one that will affect the lives of many people in following years to come.

López Miras continued to state that the problem is not one only faced by the region of Murcia, but instead it is one faced by Spain as a whole. He added, "This is also the responsibility of the Spanish Government and we are going to demand that it hold an extraordinary call for family doctors with emergencies."

Specifically, the proposal that is being put forward by the president is one that will aim to bring 1,000 resident doctors with a specialty of Family and Community Medicine to Murcia.

The president sees this proposal as being of great importance and will not stop in his hunt for doctors until the shortage has been resolved. Furthermore, his proposal will be accompanied by a request for the criteria governing the current supply of residents to be made more flexible in order to increase the supply by autonomous communities.

For the 2025 examination call for doctors, 11,943 places were offered. This figure shows an increase of 2.9%. Though this is an improvement, many in the Region see it as too little to plug the gap of shortages that are present in Murcia.
