A huge nativity scene made from sand is being crafted this Christmas in Murcia, Spain
The 21-tonne sand sculpted scene will sit in the Plaza de la Paja throughout the Christmas period
This Christmas, the city of Murcia is hosting a wonderfully unique event in which the creation of a gigantic sand nativity scene will take place. The large-scale sand project will use 21 tonnes of sand brought in from – of all places – landlocked Albacete.
The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, accompanied by the Councillor for Culture and Identity, Diego Avilés, made a visit this Thursday December 19 to the construction of one of the scenes which was taking place in Plaza de la Paja.
For six consecutive days, the sand will be compacted and sculpted with precision and detail by Monserrat Cuesta and Sergi Ramírez, internationally renowned artists with more than 35 years of experience in the world of sand sculpture.
The sculptors have worked on similar projects around the world, in countries such as Japan, the United States, Italy and Denmark. On this occasion, they wanted to personally participate in this project in Murcia and have confessed to feeling excited about being part of an initiative.
Once finished, the work will be protected with a special lacquer that will guarantee its preservation for weeks, making it an attraction for visitors to go and visit throughout the Christmas season.
The City Council has pointed out that this project is aspiring to establish itself as an annual tradition in Murcia, which they hope will return each and every year.
The Council points out that the installation, which combines creativity and a unique design, is positioned as “another tourist attraction, like the Great Christmas Tree in the Plaza Circular, the Garden of Dreams and the Great Christmas Story in the Glorieta.”
Finally, the City Council has organised for December 19 and Friday 20, from 4pm to 7pm, workshops for children where they will be able to learn how to make small figures in sand.
