Murcia police arrest two Irish nationals in international drug smuggling operation
Investigators in Murcia and Valencia found cocaine, heroin and marijuana hidden inside household appliances

Two Irish nationals have been arrested in the south of Spain after Guardia Civil officers uncovered what investigators describe as a sophisticated international drug trafficking operation based in Murcia and Valencia.
Police say the group allegedly hid drugs inside specially adapted household appliances before sending them through parcel delivery services to destinations across Europe.
The investigation led to the seizure of more than 20kg of marijuana buds, 1kg of cocaine and 80g of heroin, along with equipment linked to drug distribution including vacuum sealing machines, precision scales and packaging tools.
According to the Guardia Civil, the operation began back in 2024 when specialist officers in Murcia and Valencia started investigating suspicious activity linked to international parcel shipments.
As enquiries progressed, officers allegedly uncovered a criminal network involved in sourcing drugs from other trafficking organisations before repackaging and distributing them abroad.
Investigators explained that the substances were divided into smaller packages ranging from 100g to 2kg before being vacuum sealed to reduce the chances of detection during transport.
“The substances were hidden in false compartments built into household appliances and shipped through parcel delivery services,” a Guardia Civil spokesperson said.
Police believe the organisation went to considerable lengths to avoid detection, allegedly using fake identities and forged documents while frequently changing addresses between Murcia, Alicante, Valencia and Tarragona.
Authorities also claim the suspects deliberately chose shipping methods requiring minimal registration details.
The investigation involved cooperation between law enforcement agencies in Spain, Ireland, the UK and the Czech Republic.
During the operation, Guardia Civil officers reportedly identified around 20 suspected drug shipments, many of which were intercepted at Valencia Airport before leaving Spain.
The arrests themselves came after local police officers in Los Alcázares, Murcia, stopped a vehicle during a checkpoint and became suspicious about the identification documents shown by the two occupants.
Further checks carried out by Guardia Civil Judicial Police specialists allegedly confirmed the documents were false and identified the pair as key figures in the wider trafficking investigation.
“The collapse of the leadership of this group was triggered at a checkpoint in Los Alcazares,” the Guardia Civil explained.
Both men were arrested on suspicion of belonging to a criminal organisation, drug trafficking offences and document falsification. The driver also faces an additional road safety offence for allegedly driving without the required licence.
Police said one of the suspects is believed to be the alleged leader of the organisation and has “an extensive criminal record” in Ireland for similar offences.
The Guardia Civil confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing and warned that further arrests have not been ruled out.
