The Guardia Civil in Murcia has conducted Operation Mortero in Mazarrón, resulting in the investigation of three individuals for alleged offences related to land management, urban planning, historical heritage and environmental protection. These individuals are accused of carrying out construction work on land designated as specially protected.

 

This investigation is part of efforts by the Guardia Civil’s environmental agency SEPRONA to ensure sustainable and lawful urban development in the Region of Murcia. Their objective is to prevent illegal activities that may negatively impact land use, historical heritage and the local landscape.

 

 

During routine inspections, SEPRONA officers focused on identifying plots of protected land where unauthorised construction was taking place. Their inquiries led them to three sites in Mazarrón where illegal building work was underway.

 

The first site contained a single-family house under construction, along with a prefabricated home and a water tank. The second involved the renovation of an existing house, while the third was being fenced and prepared for use as a campsite.

 

The proposed campsite was of particular concern, as it was located within an area of high conservation priority, part of the ecological corridor network of the Region of Murcia. The development of such a project in this location posed a significant threat to the local environment.

 

 

Authorities confirmed that these construction activities violated land use regulations. Technical reports determined that the works were incompatible with the planning regulations established in Mazarrón’s General Municipal Management Plan.

 

As a result, the three individuals responsible for these unauthorised projects are now facing legal proceedings. They have been charged with offences against land and urban planning laws, historical heritage protection and environmental regulations.

 

This is not the first time that illegal builds have been shut down in Mazarrón. In October 2024, a Mazarrón resident accused of unauthorised construction on protected rural land was investigated for building on land designated for agriculture or livestock.

 

Spanish building regulations are very clear that all construction or renovation work must have all the proper permits. For that reason, it is always best to trust an experienced and fully legal builder when planning to undertake any sort of work, big or small.
