The Urban Planning Department in Cartagena has given the green light for the reopening of the La Rambla Shopping Centre, which used to house the Eroski supermarket, once extensive renovations to the building’s current façade and its 50,000 square metre interior have been completed.

 

It’s been many years since La Rambla has seen any commercial activity, but its cavernous interior was put to good use in May last year when thousands of people turned up for their Covid jab at the temporary mass vaccination centre installed there.

 

Councillor Ana Belén Castejón confirmed this week that “the appropriate permits” have been awarded for the works, which will include erecting dividing walls for new stores on the ground floor, demolishing the walls of the old cold rooms at the back of the building and the construction of a new unloading dock in the yard to facilitate delivery trucks. In addition, the entire frontage of the La Rambla Shopping Centre is set to undergo an extensive make-over.

 

The project will take approximately six months to complete with an investment of 175,000 euros and the councillor has confirmed that negotiations are already underway for DIY, food and fashion stores to set up shop in La Rambla, as well as a gym and cinema.

 

Ms Castejón considers the recovery of the shopping centre to be “an example that Cartagena is already beginning to emerge from the economic crisis after the pandemic.”

 

Shoppers in Cartagena will very soon be spoiled for choice, as in nearby Cabo de Palos, the long-neglected Las Dunas commercial centre has also been given the go-ahead for redevelopment. Once completed, the shopping centre will boast some 786 stores and create more than 400 jobs in the area.
