June 3 Dramatized visit showing the history of the Fiestas Trinitario Berberiscas in Torre Pacheco
A fun guided tour of Torre Pacheco followed by a chance to taste the local Trinitaria craft beer
Every summer in the late spring Torre Pacheco celebrates its annual Fiestas Trinitario Berberiscas, commemorating the events which resulted in the creation and naming of the town, and this year a guided dramatized tour is being held on June 3 to bring to life the most salient events in the story.
When the Moors were officially expelled from Spain in 1492 many joined gangs of Berber pirates, raiding the coastline of Murcia and sacking towns and villages for whatever booty they could find. This led to the Mar Menor area becoming depopulated for around 300 years due to the locals’ fear of losing cattle, crops and even their lives. The lack of natural shelter left the whole area vulnerable although watchtowers were built along the coast to warn of attacks, and it was not until an 18th century treaty ended the attacks that a stable population returned.
These fiestas in Torre Pacheco commemorate the conflict between Moors and Christians, and the guided tour on June 3, which begins at 11.30 outside the church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario (click for map), bridges the gap between legend and historical fact. The last stop in the walk is the Monument to Los Trinitarios, and this is followed at approximately 14.00 by a glass of Trinitaria craft beer (made in Torre Pacheco).
The price per person is just 3 euros, including the beer, and online booking can be found here.
Further information is available from the tourist office of Torre Pacheco (telephone 968 579937, email turismo@torrepacheco.es)
