January 31-February 2 Orihuela Medieval Market celebrates 25th anniversary
Step back in time as one of the popular street festivals in Orihuela returns in 2025
Mark your calendars for January 31 to February 2, as Orihuela transforms into a bustling medieval town to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its iconic Medieval Market. Experience the magic of history as the city’s streets come alive with vibrant traditions, cultural showcases and unforgettable entertainment.
The city council has just put the contract for the event out to tender and companies have until December 26 to submit their offers, so we won’t know exactly what’s in store for another few weeks. However, Councillor Rocío Ortuño has promised that these anniversary celebrations will be bigger and better than ever.
The popularity of the festival has been growing since it first started more than two decades ago and last year, around 12,000 people flocked to the city to enjoy the festivities as Orihuela returned to the Middle Ages.
Each year, the streets are lined with themed stalls, taverns and captivating performances, all evoking the spirit of a time gone by. As always, the theme of the 2025 edition will remain faithful to the three cultures that coexisted during the medieval period: Christian, Jewish and Muslim, so the route will be divided into three areas, spanning from Plaza de Santiago to Santo Domingo.
While the Medieval Market itself is definitely the epicentre, visitors can also explore Orihuela’s rich history with tours and special exhibits at landmarks like the Cathedral, Miguel Hernández House Museum and Museum of the Reconquista, all of which put on unique displays for the occasion.
Councillor Rocío Ortuño recalled that "this year we commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Orihuela Medieval Market, an important date, in which we hope to repeat the success of the last edition."
Bring the family and enjoy music, traditional crafts and engaging performances that capture the essence of medieval life. From taverns to entertainment spaces, there’s something for everyone.
