ARCHIVED - Half price tram travel in Alicante province this summer
The Valencia Government has approved a 50% reduction in fares to encourage sustainable public transport

In an attempt to cushion the rise in fuel prices, exacerbated by the Russia-Ukraine invasion, and encourage sustainable public transport, Ferrocarriles de la Generalitat Valenciana (the regional government railways) has agreed to slash Alicante Tram fares and season tickets by up to 50% from summer onwards.
Currently, a 10-trip full travel pass costs up to 40.05 euros, depending on the journeys, but under the promotional ticket structure, the price will be halved to 20 euros following a 450,000 investment by FGV.
There are currently six possible zone combinations, which will be reduced to three applicable fares: one, two or three zones in which the 10-trip ticket will cost eight euros (Alicante and its metropolitan area), 12 euros (Alicante-Benidorm) and 20 euros (Alicante-Denia), respectively.
What this basically means is the zones correspond to three areas in the province: L'Alacantí, Marina Baixa and Marina Alta, with the following stops:
- Zone A: d'Alacant; Sant Vicent del Raspeig; El Campello; Sant Joan and Mutxamel.
- Zone B: Villajoyosa; Benidorm, Alfaz del Pi; Altea
- Zone C: Calpe, Teulada, Gata de Gorgos, Benissa and Denia.

The price structure looks simple, but passengers will on occasions travel through two different zones, so it's wise to check, although FGV claims all passengers should make a saving of at least 42%.
"This measure, in addition to the significant savings it will bring to the people of Alicante, will help to make public transport easier and, ultimately, encourage its use as a real alternative to the car. In this way, we can also cushion the effect of the continued rise in fuel prices," explained the head of Territorial Policy, Public Works and Mobility, Arcadi España.
"And when the new Line 9 comes into operation, at the end of this year or beginning of 2023, with these new rates it will be possible to travel by tram from Denia to Alicante for half the price," added the minister.
