Gardens and parks of the Orihuela Costa will experience new life as the municipal company IIdo take charge in 2025
Despite many delays and setbacks, the company will take charge of the green areas almost a year after their contract was approved
The municipal company Ildo will take control of the maintenance of the green spaces of the Orihuela Costa at the beginning of 2025. The company was approved by the government to handle the work a year ago, but have not begun the work because of a number of delays.
Many green areas of the municipality are in real need of work and maintenance. The past few months alone has seen the collapse of several palm trees and pines in the area. Certain trees have required urgent care and the police have informed the town hall that something needs to be done in the parks because of the danger that some trees pose.
It was all the way back in February when the green light was given to the company IIdo, to look after and maintain the parks. They were set to begin around Easter time, before being postponed to the summer and then finally to November before meeting more delays.
Like many contracts issued by town halls in Spain, the procedure has been lengthy and this has affected the lives of many people who wish to use the parks and the green areas which have been left for a year to grow wild and out of control.
Finally however, the work is set to begin in January 2025, after a number of government bodies have looked over the proposal, and the parks will once again be looked after on the Orihuela Costa.
The company that has been carrying out the maintenance prior to last year was called Actúa. This company carried out the work on the parks despite the fact they had not been given a contract from the government for the past seven years.
The reason for this is that the council has been involved in an illegal situation in which it has failed to pay invoices and therefore has generated late payment interest of thousands of euros.
The contractor Actúa therefore has provided minimum service to avoid objections in the collection from the government, and this in turn has caused many residents of the area to complain about the shape in which their parks have been left.
With the vehicles, machinery and work schedule already in place, the decree also determines the conditions and rates to be paid to the public company. The City Council must provide the necessary funds to cover a service that was estimated in the contract at around two million a year.
With budget cuts and political problems in the council, it has meant that the work to be carried out must be undertaken at a discounted rate than previously planned. Initially the government was to grant a five year contract for ten million euros, however this has been cut and the council are looking to make a saving of 3.5 million euros.
The servicing of the green areas however is an important part of the work to be done in Spain, and it has now been neglected for over a year. The contract involves 2.5 million square metres of land, 213 green areas in Orihuela Costa and 7,000 palm trees. In addition, the new contract increased the number of workers for the maintenance of the green areas of Orihuela Costa from 12 to 30.
