Fresh fears of landslides on Cabo Roig cliff walk
Two new sinkholes have opened up in the stone wall that overhangs the Orihuela Costa promenade
More than four years after a devastating gota fria storm left massive sinkholes in the Cabo Roig coastal promenade and despite numerous efforts to repair the damage, new gaps have started appearing in the same area, posing a major threat to walkers.
The pedestrian path hangs picturesquely over the Costa Blanca waters and is a popular walking route for both locals and tourists all year round.
On January 31, an environmental inspector from the Coastal Demarcation identified a new risk for pedestrians along the pathway, which offers stunning views of the coastline. Located at the back of plot number 5 on Calle Lebeche, the overhanging cliff now features two holes in the stone wall that perches right over the promenade. These holes put the entire stretch of the slope in danger of landslides and erosion.
Following the discovery, the Orihuela City Council quickly fenced off the area and placed warnings to alert pedestrians of the potential peril. The council has also contacted the owner of the plot, a foreign national, to inform them of the situation and request their cooperation in addressing the issue.
Any necessary repairs or maintenance work must be approved by the local government and performed in accordance with regional regulations. While the council is responsible for maintaining the area, the cost of repairs would ultimately be passed on to the property owner.
Previous attempts to repair the sinkhole on the promenade near La Caleta beach resulted in the use of different materials, which stand out from the original landscape. The City Council is still awaiting a correction to blend the repaired area with its surroundings.
The persistent problems plaguing the Cabo Roig promenade highlight the need for sustained investment in infrastructure and disaster prevention measures. As the frequency and severity of natural disasters continue to increase, it is essential that local authorities prioritise the safety and well-being of residents and visitors alike.
Until a long-term solution is implemented, pedestrians are advised to exercise caution when walking along the affected stretch of the promenade.
This is the latest bone of contention for local residents, who are still waiting for the blocked off section of the cliff walk between Cabo Roig and Aguamarina to be reopened. This portion of the promenade has been closed off since 2021, forcing walkers to detour around 2 kilometres if they want to enjoy the entire Orihuela Costa cliff walk.
