First private rocket made in Spain prepares to launch into space
The historic launch of the Miura 1 from the Huelva base in Andalucia can be watched live minute-by-minute
Spain was about to make history with the launch of its first space rocket, the Miura 1, which will take off on its inaugural journey from the El Arenosillo Experiment Center (CEDEA) in Moguer, Huelva on Wednesday morning, May 31.
The launch window began at 8am yesterday but the lift-off has been delayed due to the strong winds that are hitting all of Andalucia this week. However, the momentous moment is still expected to go ahead. Meanwhile, the lead-up to the landmark launch can be followed on the YouTube channel of Alicante company PLD Space minute-by-minute and the take-off itself will be posted live.
The exciting event comes after Spain became the 25th country to sign the NASA Artemis Accords at Moncloa Palace in Madrid on Tuesday May 30.
Pedro Sánchez, President of Spain, Julissa Reynoso, the US Ambassador to Spain and Andorra, and Karen Feldstein, NASA Associate Administrator for International and Interagency Relations were all in attendance.
“The United States and Spain’s partnership in space has been on display for decades, but today we bring it to new heights,” said Nelson. “As the newest member of the Artemis Accords family, Spain will safeguard our shared ideals by helping ensure that humanity’s rapid expansion into space is done peacefully, safely, and transparently.”
“Space is an example of international collaboration and a priority for our country's vision,” said President Sánchez. “We are witnessing a commitment by the Government of Spain to a key sector that generates opportunities and high-quality employment, which is a priority and strategic area, essential to help and protect our society.”
Established in 2020, the Artemis Accords are a key set of principles designed to guide space exploration and cooperation among member nations.
