Storm Filomena beats coldest temperature record for two consecutive days

The record for the coldest temperature ever recorded in Spain which was set this Wednesday in Lleida, in the Catalan Pyrenees, a chilling 34.1 degrees, has lasted less than a day, as last night a weather monitoring station in León beat its record with a freezing -35.6 degrees.

The record was set in Vega de Liordes, at an altitude of 1,872 meters in the Picos de Europa National Park at the refugio Collado Fermoso in the province of León (Castilla y León).

This week has been extremely cold, with heavy frosts in much of Spain even in areas very close to the coast which normally escape the winter frosts; Mediterranean coastal region Murcia has reported millions of euros worth of damage to spring salad crops this week.

There are dozens of roads closed by heavy snowfalls this Thursday and it is reported to be snowing heavily in central Madrid, with 10cm expected in the heart of the capital.

Tomorrow the snowfall is expected to be heavier in much of the country.
