Some 1,800 victims of the Spanish Civil War and the brutal Franco regime will finally have their memories honoured after the culmination of an extensive two-year investigation by the Federation of Historical Memory Associations of the Region of Murcia (FAMHRM).

 

Up until now the registry in Murcia barely stretched to six grave sites but this new discovery has brought that number to 513, and the resting places will be added to an official online catalogue. Here, history buffs and relatives alike can find extensive information on the graves: location on an interactive map, type of grave, denomination, name and profession of the victims, age, date of death and burial details.

 

More than half the burial sites were found in Cartagena and Murcia but the graves are scattered throughout the Region, with almost fifty in Lorca and more than a dozen in municipalities such as Caravaca, Águilas, Mula and Cieza.

 

Approved last October, the Spanish Democratic Memory Law demands that autonomous communities prepare an integrated map of all the final resting places of the victims of the regime.

 

And while acknowledging that with the new catalogue “the victims of the Region of Murcia finally have visibility,” FAMHRM researchers believe that the list is far from complete.

 

“There is still much to do, we remain committed to truth, justice and reparation.”
