Cadiz landmark will open to tourist visits for first time in 10 years

The Spanish cruise tourist and port city of Cádiz will soon see the long-awaited reopening of one of its most iconic historical landmarks, with visitors able to go inside this renovated castle in the next few weeks.

The Castillo de San Sebastián, located at the end of a spit of land off the Playa de la Caleta beach in the city’s old town, has been closed and in a state of disrepair for nearly a decade.

Dating back to the early 18th century, the castle has variously been used as a defensive fort, a prison and a set for films like Die Another Day starring Pierce Brosnan and Halle Berry.

Now, the exterior parts of the site are to be reopened to the public in the coming weeks following an agreement reached between the City Council of Cádiz, the Government Subdelegation in Cádiz and the Directorate General for the Coast and the Sea.

This development is the result of a collaboration which started last April, when it was agreed that they would jointly pay for the refurbishment and conservation of this historic castle.

The City Council of Cádiz and the Coastal Demarcation, owner of the Castle of San Sebastián, will therefore proceed to open this fortress in mid-August for the use and enjoyment of visitors, but only until the end of September.

Work has already begun on cleaning, clearing and adapting the exterior of the castle so that in the coming weeks it can receive the first visits. This is just the first phase before ownership of the castle is definitively transferred to the city of Cádiz for its management and to be able to create a permanent project for the San Sebastián site in the medium term.
