ARCHIVED - 26th February, Asiático coffee competition at the Teatro Romea in Murcia
The Asiático has become one of the unofficial emblems of the city of Cartagena
The latest of the events being held in Murcia to coincide with the city having been named the Gastronomic Capital of Spain for 2020 is a competition on Wednesday 26th February in which ten specialist barmen will compete to create the best “Asiático” coffee, bringing one of the most emblematic tastes of Cartagena to the regional capital.
The Asiático is an alcoholic coffee whose popularity in Cartagena is attributed to the influence of foreign seamen in Cartagena in the first half of the 20th century, and there is fierce competition among local bar and cafeteria owners to claim for themselves the title of the best and most authentic . However, the key ingredients are always the same: coffee, condensed milk, a liqueur – preferably the locally produced Licor43, sometimes mixed with another beverage - and spices, including cinnamon, grated lemon rind and unground coffee beans sprinkled on the top.

The competition at the Teatro Romea begins at 18.00 and the jury consists of José Ángel Díaz, Manuel Padín (the councillor for Tourism, Commerce, Health and Consumer Issues in the Town Hall of Cartagena and José Gomariz of the company Salzillo Tea and Coffee.
Throughout 2020 a series of events, workshops, show cookings, exhibitions and children’s activities are being held in Murcia to celebrate the Region’s gastronomy, and the offices of Murcia Capital Gastronómica are open every day of the year from 10.00 to 14.00 and 17.00 to 22.00.
