Yellow alert for storms in Murcia region amid cold weather: Weekend forecast December 12-15

Heavy rainfall is expected tonight, with warnings for coastal and southern areas

The recent cold snap in the Region of Murcia, which brought plummeting temperatures and early morning frost in areas such as the Northwest and other inland zones, will transition into heavy rainfall and thunderstorms tonight.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a yellow alert for storms and heavy rain beginning early Friday morning, December 13.

The alert, which applies to various parts of the region, highlights significant risks in the Guadalentín Valley, Lorca, Águilas, Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón.

In these areas, rainfall could reach up to 15mm per square metre within one hour, accompanied by occasional intense thunderstorms. The warning will be in effect from midnight until 8am on Friday.

Authorities are urging residents in flood-prone and urban areas with drainage issues to take extra precautions. The City Council of Cartagena has activated its pre-emergency municipal services and issued advice to residents. Recommendations include checking and clearing downspouts, avoiding parking in dry riverbeds (ramblas), and refraining from attempting to cross flooded roads or wadi beds.

While the coastal and southern municipalities, including Torre Pacheco, La Unión, San Javier, Totana, San Pedro del Pinatar, Los Alcázares and Lorca, are most at risk, the likelihood of significant rainfall in inland areas remains lower.

Once the yellow alert ends on Friday morning, stability is expected to return to most parts of the region over the weekend, with plenty of sunshine on Saturday December 14. However, Sunday 15 which be much cloudier overall and there is a 5-25% chance of more rain on Sunday and Monday.
