Yecla hit by flooding and road closures this Monday
The storm that hit northern Murcia yesterday afternoon affected numerous crops and flooded roads in and out of Yecla
Heavy rain and storms once again caused extreme situations for drivers and some people who were in their houses in the countryside in the municipality of Yecla this Monday, June 5.
The municipality in northern Murcia was lashed by a sudden downpour yesterday afternoon, leaving in its wake a trail of flooded fields, numerous road closures and a regional road closed to traffic for more than an hour.
In just 15 minutes of heavy rain, up to 62 litres per square metre of water were recorded as having fallen in some areas in the north of Yecla, with serious consequences for the town’s roads, which turned into veritable rivers in the space of just a few minutes.

The effects of the storm were especially noteworthy on the roads into Yecla from the Alicante town of Villena and from Almansa, in the neighbouring province of Albacete. Local Police officers, members of the Civil Protection and the Fire Brigade had to intervene urgently at several points on the Almansa road to help drivers, one of whom was trapped in his vehicle in the middle of one of a sudden flash flood. Thankfully, officers were able to rescue him and no personal injuries were reported.
It is also thought that damage may have been caused to crops in the area. In fact, across the Region as a whole it is estimated that the recent storms have caused a total of 4.7 million euros’ worth of damage to crops.
No more weather warnings for storms or the risk of flooding have been issued for the near future in Murcia and, barring a few showers, the weather should begin to dry out and warm up over the course of this week.
