Museum staff plan to continue to strike intermittently until their collective labour agreement is satisfactorily updated

Workers at Malaga Picasso Museum go on strike

Employees at the Museo Picasso Málaga have decided to strike for several days this summer, at least on June 14 and 20.

The employees say they are attempting to unblock the negotiations of their fifth collective labour agreement, and are prepared to call as many strikes during the summer high season as they consider necessary.

According to the MPM Works Council, the museum management are trying to impose a non-negotiated text of their collective labour agreement, which governs such issues as working hours and the amount of holiday they are entitled to, and to deteriorate the working environment by threatening to outsource services.

“These pressure tactics are uncomfortable for everyone involved, but we are forced into them by the lack of response from those in charge of the museum,” said the Works Council of their decision to strike. “They want to impose a non-negotiated labour agreement with a text that jeopardizes absolutely essential issues such as life-work balance, flexible working hours and public holidays, amongst others.”

Other grievances they wish to be addressed include the fact that pay has not increased over the past 11 years, despite inflation.

The museum currently has a popular exhibition running entitled ‘Picasso Sculptor. Matter and Body’ until September 10.

In October 2023, the museum will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of its official opening and will also be taking part in the international ‘Celebrating Picasso. 1973-2023’ project. Despite the rough treatment claimed by employees, the museum has international prestige and has received around 9 million visitors in the last two decades since it first opened.
