Which supermarkets are open in Spain over the December long weekend?
December 6 and 8 are bank holidays in Spain and make up what is commonly referred to as the Constitution long weekend
The Constitution long weekend at the beginning of December is usually one of the longest of the year in Spain, with two public bank holidays coming in quick succession. Both December 6 and December 8 are national holidays in Spain, and since there’s only one day in between them, this is taken off in some businesses, bars and shops too in order to make a long weekend or ‘puente’.
As with all national holidays, many supermarkets will remain open but some will alter their opening hours to allow workers a break.
Here are the holiday hours of some of the most popular supermarkets in Spain:
Mercadona
As a general rule, Mercadona stores close on Sundays and bank holidays, so the Valencian chain will remain closed on Wednesday December 6 and Friday December 8.
Alcampo
Unlike Mercadona, Alcampo will open some of its stores over the December long weekend, but its hours will be reduced to 10am until 3pm or 10am until 9pm depending on the location. To check if your local supermarket will open, use the Alcampo search engine, which allows customers to enter their postcode.
Aldi
The discount chain will open on Wednesday and Friday, but many locations will reduce their operating hours. You can check the schedule through the ‘Find your supermarket’ section of the Aldi website.
Carrefour
Carrefour, which now operates several kinds of stores including hypermarkets, Carrefour Express Supermarkets and Carrefour Markets, also has an online search engine where you can check the supermarket’s opening hours.
In the case of Express, these shops will open on both holidays from 10am to 9pm.
Dia
Dia supermarkets usually open between 9am and 9.30pm and according to its website, the supermarket chain will remain open on December 6 and 8, but with some schedule changes.
Lidl
The discount retailer will also stay open throughout the Constitution holiday between the hours of 9am and 10pm. It’s best to check the website though in case there are any changes in your area.
