What’s on in Aguilas March 2024
Carnival is over and Águilas prepares for Semana Santa as bathers begin to venture back into the Med!
After the excesses and celebrations of Carnival it might be expected that the town of Águilas in south-west Murcia would be taking a well-deserved breather, but it's already time to prepare for the Easter celebrations and holidays all over Spain and Águilas is getting ready to welcome the first influx of sunseekers - weather permitting, of course!
Which is not to say, of course, that nothing else is happening during March... extra guided visits have been organized during the Easter holidays and to coincide with the salted fish gastronomic event, the ProMúsica classical concert season continues at the auditorium and the myriad of year-round community activities in the municipalities continue as ever.
Whatever the reason for your visit, don't forget to make the tourist office your first port of call - click here for map.
For further information on these and other events, as well as places to see and visit throughout the municipality, contact the tourist office of Águilas or visit the home page of Águilas Today.
NOTE: This schedule is likely to be updated as the month progresses, and the program for the Semana Santa processions will be added when it is confirmed!

This walk takes place in the regional park of Cabo Cope and Puntas del Calnegre, allowing participants to enjoy the natural scenery on offer, as well as walking through nesting areas for different bird species and Roman remains.
Friday March 15 Free guided tour of the history of salted fish products in Águilas
Programmed to coincide with the tapas route on the theme of "salazones", this visit starts at the Ícaro monument at 12.00 and lasts approximately 90 minutes. Included are the Paseo Marítimo de los Pescadores, the exhibition of the history of fishing in Águilas, the archaeological museum and a tasting at the Restaurante el Poli.
A short talk is given by Juan de Dios Hernández.
Prior reservations are required here.
Saturday March 16, the Mr Gillman and El Hornillo railways tour
Starts outside the auditorium at 11.00.
Duration: approximately 2 hours.
Bookings: through the Region of Murcia tourist board here or through the tourist office.
This tour allows participants to experience the history of the traders and industrialists who played such an important role in the economy of Águilas in the second half of the 19th century and the first 30 years of the 20th, among them Gustavo Gillman. The route includes the Monument to the Railway, the bridge over the Rambla de las Culebras, the Sendero del Hornillo and the museum which has been created in the railway tunnel, which led to the Embarcadero del Hornillo loading jetty.
For further info click here.
Sunday March 24, guided tour of the castle of San Juan de Águilas
Start: 11.00 at the tourist office
The 18th century castle of San Juan is one of the most visible and important monuments of Águilas, offering both an insight into the town’s history and fabulous views over the town itself and the Mediterranean.
Further info here. Reservations to take part in the free visit should be made through the regional tourist board here.
Comfortable clothing and footwear, a hat, water and sun cream are already advisable at this time of year!
Wednesday March 27, Dramatized tour of the museumes of Águilas
This original tour of the main museums of Águilas allows you to discover some of the mysterious secrets they contain, with the visits conducted by two prestigious mediums, Isabella and Fidel, as they take visitors around the Archaeological Museum, the Carnival Museum and the Centro de Interpretación Paco Rabal.
Along the route they may homage to the achievements of various people associated with the museums, all of them much-loved by the local Aguileños.
The free tour starts at the Museo Arqueológico at 18.00 and lasts approximately 90 minutes. Online booking is available online here, although group sizes are limited to 30: early reservations are recommended as the visits last summer were quickly fully booked!
Every Saturday morning, visit the iconic Embarcadero del Hornillo railway loading jetty
The iconic 120-year-old railway loading jetty of the Embarcadero de Hornillo has recently been opened to visits from members of the public as of June 3. The first phase of the project to restore the jetty was completed during the spring and much of its former glory (and structural stability) has been recovered.
As a result non-guided visits are now permitted, taking place during October on Saturdays between 11.00 and 13.00. This timetable is susceptible to modification according to demand. Registration for these free visits is currently through the Águilas tourist office only but it is hoped that an online facility is soon to be added.
