ARCHIVED - What to do in Alicante this autumn: Events and activities at Santa Barbara Castle Sept-Dec 2022
More than 465,000 people have already visited Castillo de Santa Bárbara in Alicante city so far this year
Historical recreations, a Halloween-themed weekend, horror movies, activities for children including storytelling and magic, and musical performances are the focus of Santa Bárbara Castle's packed autumn calendar, ensuring something for everyone .
According to Alicante Tourist Board, more than 465,000 people have visited the historic fortress already this year, "exceeding all expectations" for the first year of outsourced management of the castle, "which confirms the success of the management model the board has opted for".
"We are seeing the magnificent results of the public-private collaboration at the castle and are delighted that 65% of these 465,000-plus visits are first visits predominantly from Spain, Poland, UK, Norway, Italy and Germany in that order," explained head of the tourist board, Elena Lumbreras.
The highlight of the autumn program will take place from December 3-5. Coinciding with the feast of Santa Bárbara, a historical re-enactment will take place which will depict the different stages through which the castle has passed between the 13th and 19th Centuries. Different areas of the fortress will be themed according to the different periods, camps will be set up and there will be educational talks, battles, changing of the guard and detonations to relive the main historical events.
There will also be a Halloween-themed weekend on October 29 and 30, a free activity with storytelling and a 'Halloween Dance' with entertainers.
"The cultural program for the coming months is aimed at all audiences, especially families and there will also be a variety of storytelling, puppet shows and magic shows," added the city council. More details will be announced on its website.
Prior to this, the calendar includes:
September 25, 8pm: Musical performance by Granada-based band 'Niños Mutantes' (Mutant Chidlren).
October 1 and 2, 12.30pm: Chamber Music Quartet concerts by the Óscar Esplá Conservatory of Music.
Novermber 6, 12.30pm: Wind Quintet of the CSMA concert.
In addition, guided tours of the castle, which is open from 10am to 8pm, will continue from Monday to Friday with dramatised tours at weekends and tasting sessions of Alicante beers and wines.
Launching the autumn program last week, head of the tourist board. Elena Lumbreras. also announced that Alicante City Council plans to start work on the bastion of Santa Ana so that it can not only be visited by the public, but also be the setting for activities, including night-time tours.
