Murcia City was battered by torrential rain this weekend on a day when the temperatures were expected to top 40ºC

On a day when the Region of Murcia was expected to be one of the hottest places in all of Spain, the skies suddenly opened on Saturday afternoon (April 28) and poured forth a deluge of rain that caused untold disruption.

In the space of a couple of hours, Murcia city recorded more rainfall than the entire Region has seen so far this year. Unfortunately, the freak storm coincided with the second day of the sell-out Warm Up Festival, which had to be cancelled as the open-air La Finca venue quickly turned into a swamp.

The rain gauge in La Fica recorded an incredible 6.2 litres of water per square metre instantly.

Only two artists, Maestro Espada and Natalia Lacunza, had performed before the downpour scattered concert-goers to nearby bars, with one group taking refuge in a Laundromat and, half naked, using the opportunity to dry their sodden clothes.

Luckily, the weather cleared up overnight and the third instalment of the Warm Up Festival went off without a hitch on Sunday April 30. The coming week promises to be pleasant and uneventful weather-wise, with a bit of light drizzle on Monday May 1 giving way to clear skies and comfortable temperatures.
