Just as southern Spain returns to some sort of weather normality following the devastating floods of last week, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a red alert in Barcelona on Monday November 4 and residents have been sent urgent risk warning messages by the Catalan government.
Shocking images have emerged of water flooding through the terminal at Barcelona’s El Prat Airport, where more than 50 incoming flights have already been cancelled. Aena diverted another 17 planes to other Spanish airports as the rainstorms forecast for the morning of November 4 turned into a deluge.
According to Aemet, rainfall of 180 millimetres is expected in the next 12 hours, which will mainly affect the Baix Llobregat and surrounding areas.
The service of Catalonia's suburban trains has been cancelled due to the severe weather conditions, leaving commuters to find alternative modes of transportation.

In a message on his social media account, President Salvador Illa has asked the public to be cautious and stay away from streams and ravines, even if it's not raining. He emphasised the importance of following the advice of emergency services and avoiding unnecessary travel.
The heavy rainfall has already caused flooding in parts of Tarragona and the Garraf region, with streets and roads becoming impassable.
A resolution of the Generalitat has been put in place, limiting mobility in the affected regions and suspending all educational, university and sports activities. The restrictions will remain in place until further notice.
