Walk-in mobile flu and Covid vaccine centres hit the road in Alicante
The mobile vaccination centre will make its first stops in Alicante city and Elche this weekend
The peak season for flu and other respiratory illnesses is upon us and it’s expected to last until at least February or March next year. Since it takes around two weeks for our bodies to develop antibodies after getting immunised, now is the time to avail ourselves of the Covid and flu vaccines.
The local health authorities are urging residents of Alicante to take action and get vaccinated against these potentially life-threatening diseases. And now, it's easier than ever to do so, thanks to the launch of a mobile vaccination centre that will be visiting several locations in the province.
The mobile vaccination centre, which was initially scheduled to start on November 3 but was delayed due to the DANA, will finally kick off this Saturday November 9, in Alicante's Plaza de España, opposite the bullring.
From there, it will move to Elche on Sunday November 10, and will be located on the Paseo de Jaca, opposite the Altamira Palace. The centre will be open from 10am to 2pm, and no appointment is necessary.
In the coming days, Spain’s Ministry of Health will announce the dates on which the walk-in vaccination unit will arrive in three other municipalities: Torrevieja, Benidorm and Alcoy.
The 2024/2025 vaccination campaign started on October 14 with jabs administered in residential homes for the elderly and disabled and since Monday November 4, flu and Covid inoculations have been opened up to everyone. Anyone who would like to get the vaccines can simply make an appointment at their local medical centre.
This year, Alicante residents will also have the option of getting the jab against respiratory syncytial virus, which causes 90% of cases of bronchiolitis in infants.
The aim of the Ministry of Health is to “exceed the vaccination coverage achieved each year and, to this end, we have included new measures to offer more facilities to the population when it comes to getting vaccinated, as is the case of the vaccination campaign in educational and special education centres,” a spokesperson explained.
To carry out this vaccination campaign, the Health Department has acquired 1,260,000 doses of the flu vaccine for an amount of 12.7 million euros, with the possibility of increasing this by 20% depending on demand. In addition, the Valencian Community currently has 520,000 doses of the vaccine against Covid-19 and new supplies will be received every week to cover the entire population, according to the same sources.
Both vaccines are updated each campaign to address new variants or strains that emerge and ensure immunisation.
