ARCHIVED - Villas Caravaning starts installing water hydrants, but there are many other problems threatening closure
Cartagena City Council, which has suspended the campsite’s licence, has also identified building infractions and illegal renovations at the campsite

The Villas Caravaning campsite in La Manga has already installed 22 new fire hydrants and will soon have four more. It will also soon have two hydrants with greater water output capacity and a small fire engine. Planning has also begun to individualise the electrical panels in the homes owned by the residents to avoid faults that can have consequences for the whole chain.
The investment in safety will amount to around 200,000 euros, which the residents have already agreed to cover by taking on an increase in their fees. Among the other measures included are the rehabilitation of a reservoir that could be useful in case of fire. The hydrants will be equipped with hoses to fight the fire even before the fire brigade arrives and they also plan to purchase 50 fire extinguishers.
These are just some of the initiatives required by Cartagena City Council to lift the suspension of the operating licence that could lead to the closure of the facilities where more than 1,500 of the 2,100 plots are occupied.
“We are working to satisfy these requests,” explained the managing company, Caravanings Costa Cálida SL. The City Hall is keeping a close eye on developments to decide during the month of June whether the requirements are met to keep the campsite open this summer or not.
The suspension of the licence was announced a fortnight ago by the City Planning Department when they identified several fire safety deficiencies after part of the eastern sector burnt down on October 3, 2021.
It’s not just fire safety measures that are the problem
In addition, there are other serious irregularities in the campsite, such as buildings and constructions that have not been legalized, ranging from an unauthorised water park to a bar along the coastal area and even houses that have been partly refurbished without a licence.
The most urgent thing is to remedy the safety deficiencies, of course, but Cartagena is demanding that the company that manages the campsite, the campers and the homeowners must also solve its urban planning problems.
“We have taken note that there are 113 owners with part of their properties out of order and we are going to take them to court if they don’t do something,” said the president of the campsite’s residents’ association, Juan García.
