VIDEO: Two-metre shark washes up dead on Benissa coastline, Alicante
The shark was discovered by a diver in a rocky area close to Club Náutico de les Bassetes Diving School on the Costa Blanca
A diver in Benissa got quite a scare when he stumbled across a two-metre (6ft 6in) dead shark that had been washed up close to Club Náutico de les Bassetes Diving School earlier this week.
Stormy conditions at sea are believed to have dragged in the fish, believed to be a blue shark (Prionace glauca) from the Carcharhinidae family, which typically inhabits deep waters in the world's temperate and tropical oceans.
Although blue sharks are not usually aggressive, they are curious predators, known to approach divers, especially spearfishers when food is involved.
They spend most of their lives far from the coast and are known to be highly migratory, with individuals making several trips across entire ocean basins throughout their lifetimes.
The shark washed up in Benissa on Monday May 29 has been recovered by specialists from Oceanográfico de Valencia and a necropsy will be carried out to determine its cause of death.
Back in January, a four-metre (13 foot) bluntnose six-gill shark wshed up dead on Torrevieja's La Mata beach. The 500-kilo shark with flesh wounds was spotted by an early morning beachgoer on the coastline of the municipal 'Molina del Agua' nature reserve.
