A dramatic video has been shared showing the rescue of a Club member from the stormy seas in Águilas on Monday

Águilas Nautical Club has released a video recorded on Monday of a dramatic rescue mission to save a man who was in danger of drowning in the storm that was sending waves over the breakwater for the first time ever in the port’s history.

The video shows the Club’s head of administration, Francisco Asensio, being tossed about by the stormy seas and almost hurled into the side of moored boats several times.

Asensio fell into the water while he, along with other staff from the Club and boat owners, were trying to secure the moorings of the boats, which were breaking loose.

Quick thinking sailor Javier Robles and Club member Marcos García Pérez acted bravely to save the administrator, who had managed to hold on to the side of one of the boats but was almost squashed between two of the vessels.

Eventually, his companions succeeded in hauling him up onto the boat and help him to safety, but not before he dislocated a shoulder, according to Pedro Juan Pérez-Castejón, the director of the Nautical Club.

The port was seriously damaged by the storm earlier this week, as was the beach, and more rain next week has local councillors rushing to shore up protection plans on the Águilas coast.
