A new opportunity for climbing enthusiasts and adventure sports fans in Cieza

The Cañón de Almadenes, a spectacular gorge down which the River Segura flows in the municipalities of Cieza and Calasparra, has become one of the leading destinations in the Region of Murcia for those who enjoy nature tourism and adventure sports, and in June of 2015 added the Region’s first via ferrata to its list of attractions.

A via ferrata (Italian for “iron road”) is a type of climbing route which was first used in the Alps and the Dolomites, but is now found all over the world. The modern version normally consists of a steel cable which is fixed to the rock every few metres, and climbers attach themselves to the cable by means of a harness in order to avoid falls. This provides an ideal setting for those starting out in the world of climbing, as well as for others who have no intention of becoming experts but find the thrill of such experiences appealing. There are over 50 of these routes in Spain.

The via ferrata in the Cañón de Almadenes is classified as being of low difficulty, and follows a 300-metre-long route which includes a climb of 250 metres and a descent of 50 metres. Rungs, handrails and pegs are provided.
