ARCHIVED - Valencia region reopens vaccination centres to speed up booster rollout
Mass vaccination centres will return to increase the availability of third shots in Alicante province and the rest of the region
Large makeshift vaccination centres will reopen next week to accelerate the booster shot rollout in the Valencia region.
The decision was made during a meeting between the Valencian president, Ximo Puig, and Minister for Health, Ana Barceló amid escalating daily Covid cases across the region.
From Monday January 31, immunisation appointments will be concentrated in the field hospital next to Alicante General Hospital, El Toscar sports centre in Elche and the Príncipe Felipe Museum in the City of Arts and Sciences, Valencia.
In Castelló de la Plana, booster jabs will be administered at a site next to the General Hospital; in Gandia, they will be available at Rois de Corella sports centre; and in Paterna auditorium.
Puig stressed that the measure aims to tackle a "new stage of accelerating vaccination" after the decision was taken to administer third doses to over 18-year-olds, and assured that it will be "easier for the public to receive the dose quickly and efficiently" whilst allowing health centres to continue to offer normal healthcare services.
In addition to the reopening of mass vaccination sites, around 50 permanent immunisation centres will continue as normal, focusing on the 30 to 39 and 40 to 49-year-old age groups.
"The opening of the 'vaccinodromes' will give greater impetus to the administration of booster doses, a process in which the Valencian Community is in a very prominent position compared to the rest of Spain as one of the autonomous regions that is administering additional doses the fastest," claimed Puig.
Coverage rates in Alicante province and the rest of the region are apparently above average in the over 70, 60 to 69, and 50 to 59 age groups.
