Up to 6,000 fine for dodgy licence plates in Spain
The DGT in Spain has warned that registration plates should never be neglected

The car’s licence plate is one of the most important elements of a vehicle since it is essentially the identity stamp: the ca0r’s DNI in Spain, if you will. Because it is often neglected (or simply forgotten about) by motorists, the DGT periodically issues reminders of the importance of keeping both the front and back plates in tip-top condition – or face a costly fine of up to 6,000 euros.
This pricey sanction will be issued if the car’s licence plates have been tampered with to prevent them from being read, if attempts have been made to deliberately hide them or if the plates belong to another vehicle. This serious offence will also cause the motorist to lose 6 points from their driving licence.

In addition, the above practices can be considered crimes of documentation falsification, and could lead to a prison sentence of between six months and three years.
Simply driving without a registration plate, or having one that is illegible, can land drivers with a fine of up to 200 euros.
Registration plate requirements to pass the ITV roadworthiness test:
- License plates must be securely fastened to the vehicle to prevent them from falling off.
- Numbers and letters must be legible and must not be completely or partially erased.
- The license plate light should be in proper working order.
- The plates must be approved and abide by Traffic regulations.
- The numbers and letters on the license plate must match those on the vehicle’s records and documentation.
Las placas de matrícula deben ser perfectamente legibles y no estar deterioradas. La infracción de esta norma se sanciona.
