Two thirds of Murcia beaches are now accessible to people with disabilities

A recent study has revealed that two-thirds of the Region's beaches are now accessible to people with disabilities, marking a significant step forward in inclusivity and enjoyment for all.

The non-profit organisation Famdif has meticulously assessed 75 beaches across eight coastal municipalities in the Region of Murcia (Águilas, Cartagena, La Unión, Lorca, Los Alcázares, Mazarrón, San Javier and San Pedro del Pinatar). The study evaluated various accessibility criteria, including reserved parking, information signage, routes, ramps and walkways to the sand, as well as adapted facilities like toilets, showers, changing rooms, shaded areas and technical aids for bathing.

The findings are promising. While three beaches in Cartagena offer assisted bathing with full accessibility, 46 beaches provide accessible points with the need for a companion. Of these, two beaches are fully equipped, 36 are partially equipped, and eight offer both partial equipment and assisted bathing services in the municipalities of Mazarrón and San Javier.

This means that the majority of beaches in the Region are now welcoming to individuals with reduced mobility. The remaining 26 beaches, while still considered inaccessible, are in the minority, and efforts are underway to improve their accessibility.

The municipalities of Mazarrón (El Puerto beach), San Pedro del Pinatar (Villananitos) and Los Alcázares (Los Narejos) stand out with their adapted bathing areas, featuring shaded spaces, seats and handrails located right in the water.

Detailed information about the accessible features of each beach is readily available on the Tourism portal (turismoregiondemurcia.es) and the free mobile application ACCEDE Playas-Región de Murcia, developed by Famdif.

This empowers individuals with disabilities to plan their beach trips with confidence, knowing exactly what facilities and amenities to expect.

The director of the Institute of Tourism of the Region of Murcia, Juan Francisco Martínez, highlighted that the municipalities of the Costa Cálida carry out “continuous work to contribute to greater integration of people with disabilities” within the Strategic Plan 2022-2032.
