The Ministry of Development, Infrastructures and Spatial Planning has launched a project to modernise and digitalise the public transport network in Andalucía with an investment of over 28 million euros.

 

Several new improvements are in the works, aiming to guide the public transport system towards a digital and decarbonised economy.

 

One of the main features is an intelligent transport system which would integrate all modes of transport and would allow passengers to see different transport routes in real time, via their smart phone or informative screens placed in locations such as bus stations.

 

The transport card, which has 2.3 million users, is going to be modernised, by providing a digital version, and extended to other services in the region, such as public bicycles, car sharing, parking, etc.

 

Passengers will also be able to pay by card or using their mobile phone in the future, as the Ministry is planning to provide 1,300 card machines to be used on buses, which will reduce waiting times and fraud, as well as increasing health and safety measures, as paying by cash can often mean transmitting bacteria or viruses from one person to another.

 

Of the 28-million-euro budget, 5.6 million will be used to improve the metro systems in Granada, Málaga and Seville.

 

The regional government have also hired an information collection service which will collect user data from mobile terminals, allowing the Ministry to see which modes of transport and which routes are the most popular amongst passengers and adapt the services to the public’s transport needs.

 

This project is one of many initiatives in Andalucía to modernise services in the region and promote sustainability, as the government has also recently announced a new solar plant and an innovative cancer treatment centre.
