Cloud and some rain this week: Spain weather forecast October 6-9
Variable autumn weather set to continue, with only Tuesday looking all clear
The skies over Spain this afternoon
Spain has a mix of clear skies and rising temperatures across most of the country today, but rain and lower maximums around the southern and eastern Mediterranean coasts, according to state meteorological agency Aemet.
The rest of the week is looking fine and mostly clear tomorrow, cloudy with possible rain in some areas on Wednesday, and mostly unstable with rain and some possible storms on Thursday, except in the west of the country.
Monday, October 6
Temperatures this afternoon
The week begins with a north/south divide, as the top half of Spain sees a considerable increase in maximum temperatures, while the south and east of the country have notable drops. Very strong easterly gusts are probable in the Strait of Gibraltar.
Unsettled conditions are expected in the Mediterranean area due to a moist easterly airflow, where cloudy or overcast skies will dominate. Rainfall is likely in the Strait of Gibraltar, western Alboran Sea, and especially across the southern part of Spain’s eastern Mediterranean coast. There is a low risk of these showers being locally heavy. Isolated showers can’t be ruled out in eastern Cataluña and the Balearic Islands.
Cloudy or overcast skies are also expected in southeastern inland regions, with patchy cloud over northern Galicia, the Cantabrian coast, and the upper Ebro valley. However, skies will generally be clear across much of the country, except in the far southeast.
Stable weather will prevail in the rest of Spain, with mostly clear or partly cloudy skies. Some low cloud is expected in northern parts of the Canary Islands.
Tuesday, October 7
Predicted temperatures on Tuesday afternoon
A stable, high-pressure system will dominate, bringing generally settled weather across Spain.
Clear or mostly clear skies will prevail across most of the country, with occasional high cloud.
A notable rise in minimum temperatures is predicted in northern inland areas of the mainland.
Low morning cloud is expected in inland areas of the southeastern quadrant and scattered across the Mediterranean coast. Morning fog or mist is likely, and could be particularly dense in parts of the eastern southern plateau.
Afternoon cloud build-up is expected in the northwest (due to daytime heating), and a nearby Atlantic front may cause coastal fog or sea mist along the western coast of Galicia.
In the Canary Islands, cloudy skies will dominate in the north, with a slight chance of light, scattered rain. Skies will be mostly clear elsewhere, though light haze (calima) may occur at high altitude over the eastern islands.
Maximum temperatures will fall in Galicia and locally in parts of the southwest of the peninsula.
Elsewhere, daytime temperatures will rise slightly to moderately, especially in inland Cantabria and the southeast.
Minimum temperatures will rise in central and northern inland areas, notably so in mountainous regions.
Nighttime temperatures will fall in much of the Mediterranean region, western Andalucía, and southern Extremadura, with little change elsewhere.
Very strong trade wind gusts are likely in the Canary Islands, and possible strong easterly winds in the Strait of Gibraltar, though these should gradually ease.
Moderate winds are expected in Menorca, north-east Cataluña and the Alboran Sea, with light winds elsewhere: easterly on the Cantabrian coast, southerly along the east coast and becoming westerly across much of the rest of the country.
Wednesday, October 8
Maximum and minimum teperatures for Wednesday
Cloudy to overcast skies with rain are expected across Galicia and the Cantabrian coast, and rain may also affect nearby inland areas but is less likely in southern parts of these regions.
Elsewhere should be mostly clear or sunny, with some high cloud.
Morning low cloud is expected in the northeast and Strait of Gibraltar, with patchier low cloud in parts of the Mediterranean.
By afternoon, large amounts of convective cloud will develop over mountain areas, both central plateaus (Meseta Norte and Sur), and the eastern third of the peninsula.
This could lead to scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially in the Iberian and Central mountain systems, the Cantabrian Mountains, the Eastern Pyrenees and large parts of the central-eastern mainland. There is some uncertainty, but these storms could be locally heavy.
There is also a low chance of showers also in the eastern Baetic mountains, coastal areas of Cataloña and the Balearic Islands, where skies will be partly cloudy.
In the Canary Islands, skies will be cloudy in the north of the mountainous islands, clearer elsewhere, with hazy conditions (calima) at high altitude.
Morning fog is likely in Galicia, the Strait of Gibraltar and Cataluña, and also possible in the Balearics, Melilla and the southeast mainland.
Daytime temperatures will fall in the Iberian System, most of the western and northern thirds of mainland Spain, and notably in inland Cantabria and the northeast of Galicia.
Temperature increases are forecast in the Canary Islands, Costa del Sol and north-east Cataluña.
Night-time temperatures will drop in the far west, but rise in central and northern mainland Spain and the Balearics, with little change elsewhere.
Trade winds in the Canaries, with strong intervals and very strong gusts in exposed areas; moderate northerly winds along the Galician coast; and light winds across most of the country.
Thursday, October 9
Clouds, rain and some storms are predicted for Thursday
A cold upper-level trough is expected to bring unstable conditions across mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands.
Widespread cloud cover and showers, often thundery, are expected across the eastern third of the mainland, southeastern quadrant and Balearic Islands.
These storms may also spread to other parts of central and eastern Spain.
There is significant uncertainty, but heavy to very heavy rainfall is possible, particularly along the eastern coastal regions and Balearic Islands.
Northern Spain (Cantabrian coast, upper Ebro valley, and northern Iberian System) will probably also be cloudy, with light rain likely.
Western Spain should generally remain clear or mostly sunny.
In the Canary Islands, expect cloudy skies in the north of the mountainous islands, clearer skies elsewhere and light haze (calima) at high altitudes.
Morning fog or mist is likely in the northern and southeastern thirds of mainland Spain, and possible in the Balearics, Strait of Gibraltar and Melilla.
Maximum temperatures are set to rise in western Galicia and western Extremadura, with little change in the Canaries.
Most other regions will see a general drop in daytime temperatures, possibly notable in inland areas of eastern Spain.
Minimum temperatures are predicted to rise in the northeast but fall across most of the rest of the mainland, with little change in the islands.
Winds will mainly be light to moderate from the east and north across the mainland and Balearics, and in the Canary Islands, trade winds will blow with strong intervals.
